Rosalie Maggio, author of the Book, "How to Say It" offers the following advice when putting together your greeting message:

  • State simply you are sorry to hear about the illness, surgery, loss, etc.
  • Express concern for the person's well being, i.e., "I really hope or want you to be on the mend soon."
  • Be pleasant, positive and optimistic with your message
  • Offer to help in a very specific way (pick up groceries, provide meals for the family, run errands, cut the grass, make their sales calls for next week, etc.)  Hint:  check with a family member or neighbor to see what needs to be done.  Remember that vague offers like, "call me if you need anything" are meant to be declined, and the person/patient will quickly pick up the cue that you implicitly hope that he/she will not contact you.   P.S. - check out our Survivor Girl greeting card that has a Gift Certificate/Checklist of things you can do to cheer up the patient/person!
  • Assure the person of your affection, concern, love or prayers
  • End with your hopes for less discomfort, rapid improvement, and a brighter tomorrow
